HFS High Friction Surface
Improve and maintain road surface, enhance skid resistance and waterproof bridge decks.

Crafco High Friction Surface (HFS) is specifically designed to enhance pavement skid resistance and ideally used to waterproof conventional reinforced  concrete bridge decks.

HFS is a polymer epoxy overlay embedded with either crushed granite or bauxite material to provide the friction course.  The flexible polymer epoxy provides an effective moisture barrier.  This system has a 27 year long record of providing an effective skid resistant and protective surface for concrete bridge decks.  This system should be used as bridge deck protection systems for post-tensioned segmented concrete bridges.  HFS has been shown effective to prevent the intrusion of the chloride ions and can be expected to provide skid resistance wearing and protection for the bridge deck for 15-30 years depending on traffic.

HFS is used on pavement surfaces in need of high friction such as corners, bends, ramps and intersections effectively increasing safety without negatively affecting other pavement characteristics such as noise or durability.  HFS greatly increases vehicle stopping distances.  Application to horizontal curves can help to reduce vehicle run-off from the pavement surface and crossing over to adjacent lanes, especially in wet conditions.  Application to steep grades can help reduce skidding and braking distance.

Application requires the cleaning of the surface, the mixing and application of the epoxy followed by the application of the aggregate.  The epoxy mix is effectively achieved with the HFS equipment and the application of the aggregate with conventional spreader equipment.  After the material has been placed the curing process takes 2-4 hours depending on climatic conditions.  The loose material is swept up after the epoxy has cured.
